Geler Ryan: The Story So FarIt is a little known fact that Gerald Hargest, the founder of Brynoer was, in a former lifetime, a first class darts player. When Gerald gave up life at the oche in order to establish Brynoer, it soon became apparent that the same keen eye that led him to success in the darts world would serve him well in the world of horses. In establishing Brynoer, Gerald's first requirement was for a first class stallion. Given his talent to pick a winner, he soon came across the ideal horse in the shape of Geler Ryan. Ryan was purchased from Mr William Lloyd from the small, but highly regarded Geler Stud which is situated near Aberystwyth, Ceridgion. Ryan was a colt foal by Gwenllan Sam, owned by Mr T Davies of Llandysul and Mr Lloyd's Geler Miriam, so, on paper he had all the makings of a great horse. In Wales, the people of Ceridigion are known for two things: Their talent at breeding horses and their ability to strike a good deal. So, after a long discussion over a cup of tea and some delicious Welsh cakes baked by Mrs Wendy Lloyd herself, a price was agreed and the first of our Welsh Cobs came to Brynoer. Apart from Mrs Lloyd's legendary Welsh cakes, Geler Ryan has turned out to be one of the finest products of the Geler stud. He was shown as a yearling and he made an immediate impact on the on the showing scene. He entered thirteen shows, winning nine and being placed second on two occasions. He was placed fourth at the Royal Welsh show and he earned three young stock champion medals and one supreme champion award - fine accolades for such a young horse. At these shows he was handled by Gareth Doroff and we are sure that this handler's tireless work contributed to Geler Ryan's success. Following on from his early success, we chose to keep a low profile for this young horse until he reached maturity. We decided not to show him at all as a two year old and he was shown lightly but successfully as a three year old, earning third place at the Lampeter show and fourth place at both the Glan Usk show and the prestigious Royal Welsh show. At this time he also covered Blaencanaid Jo Jo, an attractive mare who has recently been sold on from the Brynoer stud. This produced Brynoer Destiny, the first Brynoer foal from Geler Ryan's bloodline. As a four year old, Ryan spent much of the year at stud, returning first to the Geler stud where he covered a select few mares. During this time he also again covered Blaencanaid Jo Jo .This produced Brynoer Rhian, a beautiful foal who seems to show all of the promise that would be expected from a young horse of her bloodline. After his return from the Geler stud, Ryan was put out to grass for a few months before being sent, in October 2006, on an epic journey to Belgium where he stood at the famous Rhode Stud, which is run by Mr Etienne de Sutter, president of the Belgian Cob Society. He remained in Belgium throughout most of the 2006-2007 season. He returned from this visit late in 2007. In 2008, he was once again at stud and Brynoer mares Kassie and Siwan are both currently in foal to him. Although, due to Ryan's commitments at stud, and Gerald's work commitments, we weren't able to produce Ryan to his finest form for showing this year, Ryan nevertheless enjoyed some success and was highly placed at this year's Glan-Usk show.
